Tic-Tac-Toe: play free online
Play tic-tac-toe free online, right in your browser. Take on the computer at three levels or play a friend on the same screen. The squares are big and clear, so the game is easy to use for kids and grandparents alike. There is no sign-up and no time pressure, and the game remembers where you left off.
For the classic game, pick the 3x3 board. Want more to think about? Choose the 5x5 board, where you need four in a row to win. The scoreboard next to the board keeps track of how many games each of you has won and how many ended in a tie.
How to play tic-tac-toe
- Tap New game and choose whether you want to play the computer or a friend. Pick a board and a difficulty, then tap Play.
- X always goes first. Take turns placing your mark in an empty square. Just tap the square.
- The first player to get three in a row across, down or diagonally wins. On the big board you need four in a row.
- If every square is filled and nobody has a full row, the game is a tie.
- Not sure what to do? Tap Hint and the game will show you a good square. Undo takes back your last move.
Tips
Start in the center or a corner. The center is part of four possible lines, and a corner is part of three. Always watch for two of your opponent's marks in a row and block that line right away. The strongest move is a fork, where you make two threats at once, because your opponent can only stop one of them.
Frequently asked questions
Can you beat the computer on Hard?
Not on the classic 3x3 board. On Hard the computer works through every possibility and never loses. If you play perfectly, the game ends in a tie. On Easy and Medium the computer makes mistakes, so you can definitely win there.
What is the difference between 3x3 and 5x5?
On 3x3 you need three in a row, just like classic tic-tac-toe on paper. On 5x5 there is room for many more lines, and you need four in a row. Games run longer with more options, which makes it a nice extra challenge.
Who goes first against the computer?
X always goes first. Under New game you choose whether you want to be X and go first, or let the computer be X and start. Going first gives a small advantage.
What else is the game called?
Tic-tac-toe is also known as noughts and crosses or Xs and Os. It is one of the oldest and best known games for two players, and anyone from about age five can play.
