Daily Word Game: free 5-letter word puzzle

Daily Word is a calm, friendly word game in English. Every day there is one new 5-letter word, and it is the same word for everyone. You have six guesses to find it. There is no login, no timer and no ads in the way, and the big, clear tiles work just as well on a tablet as on a phone or computer.

How to play

  1. Type a 5-letter English word with the keyboard on the screen or your own keyboard.
  2. Press Enter. The word has to be on the word list. If it is not, the row gives a gentle shake and you can fix it.
  3. The tiles change color and get a mark. Mint with a bar under the letter means the letter is in the right spot. Yellow with a dot in the corner means the letter is in the word, but in another spot. Gray with no mark means the letter is not in the word.
  4. Use what you learned for your next guess. The keyboard shows the same colors and marks, so you can see which letters you have tried.
  5. Find the word in six guesses or fewer. If you get stuck, Hint can show you a letter, up to two times per word.

When you are done, you can share your result with family and friends. The shared result only shows the pattern of colored squares, never the word itself. Want to keep playing? Choose Practice word under New game to get a random word.

Tips for a good start

  • Start with a word that has several common letters, like CRANE, SLATE or TRAIN. Vowels such as A, E and O and consonants such as R, S, T and L show up in many words.
  • Try not to reuse gray letters. Every new letter you test gives you more information.
  • Remember that letters can repeat. Words like SHEEP, FLOOR and COCOA have double letters.
  • Stuck between a few options? Pick a guess that tests as many of the missing letters as possible.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if a letter appears twice?

Each letter in your guess is only marked as many times as it appears in the answer. If you guess SPOON and the word only has one O, just one O is marked and the other turns gray. If one of the two letters is in the right spot, that one always gets the bar.

When does a new word come out?

A new Daily Word arrives every day at midnight, your local time. Everyone gets the same word on the same day, and a word does not come back until the whole list has been used. You can play the Daily Word once a day, but you can play as many practice words as you like.

Is Daily Word like Wordle?

Yes, the idea is the same: guess a 5-letter word in six tries with color clues. Daily Word is our own free version with its own word list, extra large tiles, a hint button and marks that do not rely on color alone.

Can I play if I am color blind?

Yes. Every color always comes with a mark. A bar under the letter means the right spot, and a dot in the corner means the letter is in the word in another spot. Letters that are not in the word are gray with no mark. The marks show up on both the board and the keyboard.

Where are my stats saved?

Your stats and your current game are saved only on this device. If you close the page in the middle of a game, you can pick up where you left off. Only the Daily Word counts in your stats, so practice words never break your streak.
