Sea Battle: play battleship style game online free

Sea Battle is a classic battleship style game you can play online for free against the computer, right in your browser. You place your own ships in your waters, and then you and the computer take turns firing. The first to sink the whole enemy fleet wins. The squares are big, hits and misses are easy to see, and you can always check which enemy ships are still afloat. There is no login, no ads in the game and no time pressure.

For a relaxed game, pick Easy. For a real fight to the finish, pick Hard, where the computer works out where your ships are most likely to be. The game remembers where you left off, so you can pick it up again another day. You can also read our battleship rules for playing with pencil and paper.

How to play Sea Battle

  1. You have five ships: a carrier that is 5 squares long, a battleship of 4, a cruiser of 3, a submarine of 3 and a destroyer of 2.
  2. Your ships start in random spots. Drag a ship to where you want it. Tap a ship to select it, and tap it again to rotate it. You can also tap Place randomly.
  3. Ships may not touch each other, not even diagonally. When you are happy, tap Start battle.
  4. Tap a square in the enemy waters to fire. A white dot means a miss. A red fire means a hit.
  5. When every square of a ship has been hit, it is sunk. The ship is then shown, and the squares around it are marked, because no other ship can be there.
  6. You take turns firing one shot at a time. The first to sink all five ships wins.

Tips

  • Fire in a checkerboard pattern while you search. The smallest ship is two squares long, so you will still find it.
  • After a hit, fire at the squares right next to it until you find which way the ship points.
  • The middle of the sea gets hit the most. Try placing some ships near the edge.
  • Keep an eye on the enemy fleet overview. If only the small ships are left, you can skip large empty areas.

Frequently asked questions

How good is the computer?

On Easy, the computer fires completely at random, so it is great for kids and beginners. On Medium, it searches in a pattern, and when it scores a hit, it fires around the ship until it is sunk. On Hard, it works out where your ships are most likely to be, and it is tough to beat.

Do you get an extra shot after a hit?

No. Here you always take turns firing one shot at a time, even after a hit. That keeps the game calm and fair, and it is how many people play with pencil and paper.

Why can't the ships touch each other?

It is a common house rule that makes the game easier to follow. Once a ship is sunk, you know the squares around it are empty. The game marks them for you, so you do not waste any shots.

Is this the same as Battleship?

Yes, Sea Battle is the classic game many people know as Battleship. The idea is the same: guess where your opponent's ships are, and be the first to sink them all.
